Dr. Sarah Scimeme
Exceeding Expectations One Patient at a Time
With a curiosity to understand the complexities of human nature and behavior, Dr. Sarah Scimeme obtained a bachelor’s degree in psychology at University of Delaware, as well as a masters in psychology from Boston University. Working as a therapist in a residential center with adjudicated teenage males with both criminal offenses as well as trauma motivated Dr. Scimeme to understand this population in greater depth. Dr Scimeme subsequently pursued a doctoral degree and attended La Salle University where she earned both a Masters and Doctoral degree in clinical psychology. Dr. Scimeme conducted research on postpartum depression, an avoidant style of coping, and bonding difficulties. Dr. Scimeme has done several poster presentations at the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies as well as a panel discussion on self-care at the Pennsylvania Psychological Association’s Annual Convention.
Dr. Scimeme completed her clinical internship at a foster care agency in a residential treatment center in New York where she remained for 7 years overseeing all clinical aspects of an adolescent female unit. Her areas of specialty include treating complex trauma in adolescents including physical, emotional, sexual abuse, neglect, loss, suicidality and self-injurious behaviors, and commercial sexual exploitation of children. Dr. Scimeme is certified in Structured Psychotherapy for Adolescents Responding to Chronic Stress, a skills-based group treatment for adolescents with complex trauma. She also possesses a postgraduate certificate in clinical supervision from Adelphi University.
Dr Scimeme is trained in empirically supported treatments and utilizes generally a cognitive behavioral approach in clinical practice. However, having worked with adolescents for a good portion of her career thus far has taught her to be genuine, practical and creative. She will often use many different methods and techniques that best meet the therapeutic need of the client. Additionally, as a parent herself, the research she has done previously has fueled her passion and desire to raise awareness, provide psychoeducation, engage in prevention efforts, and provide treatment of both perinatal and postpartum related issues. She has completed an evidenced based training program in perinatal mood and anxiety disorders through Postpartum Support International and is a central member to APS’s Maternal Mental Health Team.
