IBCLC Training

There are several pathways to becoming an IBCLC. I started my journey as a labor and delivery nurse. Working in a very busy, high-risk hospital I cared for parents and babies every single shift. You need to do this regularly to be good at this job.

An IBCLC has to have 95 education credits and over 1000 clinical hours to sit for the exam. It is extensive training learning about infant oral anatomy, breast anatomy, reasons why sometimes things don't work, and how to try to fix them (I say try because it is also important to know sometimes breastfeeding doesn't work, and then we come up with an alternative plan.)

Being a nurse prior I understand the importance of assessment and building a plan of care that works. Anyone can recite recommendations and protocols but it takes experience to understand that every parent and baby seen will have different dynamics that make their journey unique.  My goal is to help you achieve your goal.

Frequently Seen Challenges that an IBCLC can help

  • Shallow Latching

  • Poor Positioning

  • Missing hunger cues

  • Low supply

  • Flange Fitting

  • Pump Settings

These are very common difficulties and are often easily fixable. The key is to address issues early. Having a consultation within the first few days is recommended.
